To help ease this process for you and ensure you arrive a sound decision, we’ve included some main points you may want to consider when streamlining a good choice.
Size of Area to be Tiled
For smaller rooms, consider a tile with lighter hues and softer textures to help make the room feel bigger. For larger rooms a bigger tile is suitable in bolder colors. Gloss tiles in lighter hues are highly suggested for areas that receive little natural light as these tiles reflect more light.
Durability
Ceramic and porcelain tile are very durable and a beautiful choice for your home. Be sure to check tiling ratings which are classified on the PEI scale and rated from 1 to 5 with 1 being the least resistant to abrasion and 5 being the most resistant. If considering wall tile, a PEI of 2 or greater should suffice where as high traffic areas such as your entryway require a more durable product such as a tile rated with a PEI of 4 or 5.
Indoor or Outdoor?
Tiles used outdoors and indoors are required to meet certain safety standards according to the environment where they will be installed. Grout
Grout is an item that should be chosen very carefully as the color of the grout can alter the look of the tiles. A grout contrasting color gives a dramatic appearance and emphasize greatly on the lines and design of the tile. To keep the look consistent we recommend a grout color that matches the tile.
Pattern and Texture
Regarding choice between a polished or matt finish, this is largely a personal preference. Textured or matt finished tiles are less slippery and are preferred for flooring in bathroom, entryways and kitchens. Polished tiles, look more attractive and are preferred for their aesthetics. If your family is very busy or have limited time for cleaning, a glazed tile is very easy to clean.
Color
Lighter colors are serene, and calm, where a brighter color is a vibrant and playful choice. Backsplash tiles are trending, hot items for the kitchen and bath area. You can use them to help create a focus area or to complement other features of the room.
