Welland is known as Rose City because when the name was chosen in the 1920’s, the region was a large hub for locally grown roses. As for its location in the region of Niagara, two types of transit meet: waterways, such as the Welland Canal and a series of important railways connecting Canada and the United States. Prior, Welland Canal was known as Merrittisville. When the town was incorporated, the name was changed to Wellend.
